These aren't decisions based in taking a risk. Quite the opposite, these decisions are calculated and require that I trust my ability. Not my ability to succeed at the task, but rather my ability to handle the outcome, good or bad.
This got me thinking about success.
I don't have a huge business or a million followers, but I've done a lot in a short time and people often ask me how I did it.
You've probably heard the saying "success is earned by taking risks." I disagree. It's more than this. Success is earned by facing fears and here's why:
- Facing fears causes you to have an emotional investment and this leads to a sense of passion and genuine connection to the task at hand.
- When you've got a passion for what you're doing, success can be fostered because your investment is no longer anchored in the goal of "being successful," but more precisely, in the goal of making some sort of difference (small or large). Your focus has shifted.
- If you're focused on the goal of success, motivation can be lost quickly. However, if you're focused on a deeper and more personal goal with an emotional investment attached to it, then success can be born.
In every success I've had, I first had to focus my attention on the fear that I had to overcome. Those fears were not always risky, but they were always a lesson in learning to get out of my own way. That’s not to say that if you face your biggest fear success will follow. Rather, consider what fears are getting in the way of your success. Be it success in a relationship, a job or career, a life dream, or a bucket list item. What fear, big or small, stops you from going all in?
What if you focused your attention on facing that fear instead of finding every way around it?
The act of facing your fear means you accept the opportunity that comes with potential failure (yes, I said there is opportunity in failure). You accept being openly criticized, to be truly seen, and ultimately to be vulnerable and courageous. Once you can do that, you will have succeeded.
